Is It Bad to Drive With Low Fuel?
We’ve all done it. It’s easier to push your car’s gas mileage to the very brink than it is to take the time and stop at a gas station. But, like everything else in life, there are consequences for certain actions. Driving around with low fuel can create more problems and headaches than it’s worth. So the short answer? Yes. It is bad to drive with low fuel. And in today’s blog at Fuelco, we tell you why.

Damage
Diving right in, the most important reason to keep your tank full is to prevent damage to your vehicle. If you drive around below a quarter tank, your car won’t explode. But if you do it consistently, it can dramatically decrease the lifespan of your vehicle’s fuel pump. Fuel pumps work best when they are completely submerged so they aren’t exposed to any air. The more air your fuel pump gets exposed to, the lower the lifespan you can expect from it.
It’s also worth noting that in older cars, rust and sediment can collect at the bottom of your tank. When you are pulling fuel from the very bottom of your gas tank, you are also pulling in all the debris through your fuel pump and into your oil filter — neither of which is great for your vehicle.
Safety
The most obvious reason for you to not let your tank run low is safety. You don’t want to end up running out of fuel somewhere far from help. Things get even more dangerous if you run out of gas on a busy road or highway. Even if you manage to pull over, there are hundreds of cars speeding past just a few feet away from where you are pulled over. At that point, you are jeopardizing the safety of not only yourself but other people on the road as well.

Cost
When you are about to run out of gas and are desperately scrambling to find a gas station, you don’t have the luxury of shopping around for the lowest prices. You have to pull into the nearest gas station — no matter how expensive — and risk paying much more than you might have at a more economic fuel station elsewhere. While this may just seem like a minor inconvenience, it certainly adds up over time if you are consistently just pulling into the nearest gas station willy-nilly without shopping around for the best prices.
