Owner of Yonkers Convenience Store: It’s Like ‘Trader Joe’s With a Gas Pump’

When’s the last time you got frozen yogurt at a gas station? Or organic dried fruit?

Harrison native Adam Musa is trying to change the gas station/convenience store paradigm with the Yonkers opening of Fuelco/FOODSMART, a discounted gas station with a healthy food focus.

Musa termed it as being like a “Trader Joe’s with a gas pump.”

The new gas station/convenience store opened Oct. 27 on 651 Bronx River Road. It’s the second location for Fuelco/Foodsmart. The first one opened last year at 85 Virginia Road in Valhalla.

And Musa, a 22-year-old Harrison High School grad, has plans for more. His website teases that Ardsley and Tarrytown are coming soon. He also said he’d like to expand to Fairfield County, Putnam Valley and Miami-Dade.

What sets his spot apart from others, he said, is his deeply discounted gasoline — at last check the price was $2.99 for unleaded regular — as well as its variety of organic, gluten-free, and fair-trade snacks. Also stocked in the store: The usual convenience store items such as eggs, milk, bread and soda.

“The world is changing,” said Musa. “Diets are changing. Keto friendly, kosher, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free, and other dietary restrictions have people transforming their diets. Unfortunately, most traditional convenience stores have not adapted.”

Organic snacks

His strategy, he said, is to target dense residential areas with an outlet for goods that mimic retailers such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods.

So far, so good.

Where sugary sodas, candy and snack were once top sellers, Musa said his FOODSMART sales show those traditional snacks are outsold by products he stocks such as Rhythm Broccoli Bites, Harvest Snaps Green Pea Crisps, and Amphora Organic Dried Fruit.
